DO’S AND DON’TS TO ENSURE A HEALTHY IVF PREGNANCY

Dss-and-Donts-to-ensure-a-Healthy-IVF-Pregnancy

According to ICMART, over 8 billion babies have been born through IVF worldwide as of last year since 1978 and the average success rates worldwide are said to be 30% to 35%.  Do these numbers look promising? A lot of fertility clinics claim to have higher success rates without much evidence or scientific backing leading to disappointments. Thus, success with assisted reproductive techniques is not always a hundred per cent assured. A lot of factors play a role in conceiving through IVF and it becomes important to take several precautions to ensure that the procedure is successful.

IVF(In Vitro Fertilisation)is performed after trying several methods of treatment and after all else have failed. As it is a long drawn process, the monetary investment is also pretty high and could turn to be an expensive affair depending on the number of times that a couple opts to employ the procedure in case of failures. Not only does it take a toll money-wise, but it also affects one psychologically. After all, it is the desire and life-long hope of being parents that drives people to opt for infertility treatments This calls for some caution and efforts by the expectant parents to safeguard a healthy IVF pregnancy.

Given below are a few things to be kept in mind and practiced:

Boost-your-IV-pregnanc-through-simple-steps 2

  • Healthy Lifestyle: Eating healthy, exercising in moderation, resting well help in successful embryo transfer as the body is in good condition with a favorable environment such as nutrition, reduced stress etc.
  • Less intake of High Glycemic Index Foods: Glycemic index refers to the extent to which food is easily digested. Processed foods and sugar have higher GI whereas food items such as whole grains, sweet potato, legumes, broccoli, mushrooms etc. have a low GI, digesting food slowly and proving nutrition and energy to the body throughout the day. Choosing low GI also helps in fighting cravings and unnecessary intake of food. it helps keep the body weight in check
  • Cut down on Unhealthy Habits: A complete cessation of smoking, alcohol intake, recreational drugs is a must if the one is expecting good results with conception
  • Reduced Intake of Caffeine: Recent research has also indicated that excessive intake of caffeine can have an adverse effect on pregnancy
  • Reduce Stress Levels: Taking all sorts of measures to keep oneself stress-free is also important. Practicing Yoga, a spa treatment or acupuncture etc. can help reduce the stress that gets accumulated over a period of time, especially in today’s working environment. Studies have shown that reducing stress levels have greatly helped women suffering from PCOS
  • Visit a Therapist: A counseling session to clear doubts and seek clarifications to be educated about the procedure and its effect helps relieve anxiety and helps gain confidence. Visit a therapist should not be perceived in a negative way at any cost as sound mental health during pregnancy is paramount.
  • When one identifies that the sources of stress are beyond external causes, making changes in lifestyle, identifying and working on behavioral changes if required can also help. This could again be carried out with the help of a professional
  • Although the above recommendations apply to men as well. Additionally, men could contribute by augmenting sperm count before the treatment by refraining from sexual intercourse and masturbation 3-4 days before the treatment.

A factor that is most important along with the ones mentioned above is the fact of where the treatment is carried out. With 55% success rate, Dr Shwetha’s Janisthaa Fertility Center & Hospital at Basveshwaranagar, Bangalore, is one such centre, where numbers are backed with a variety of in-house treatments offered, under one single roof.  A glance through the Testimonials is a proof of the extent to which each and every hopeful couple is cared for not only by the specialists at the centre but also the staff that is extremely friendly and abide by the motto of making the experience female-friendly and less stressful. The expectations of the couple are clearly understood and 100% support is extended in realizing their dream.

Tai Chi: For a lifetime of benefits

Tai-Chi

The World Health Organization defines wellbeing not just as the absence of unhealthy symptoms, but as the presence of positive emotions, high quality of life, and a sense of happiness. Given the growing number of people battling stress, depression, and anxiety in their day-to-day lives, we could safely say that not all is well when it comes to wellbeing of people at large. These invisible diseases don’t harm the body as much as they harm one’s mind—the nerve centre, responsible for our happiness and wellbeing. People often take recourse to the ancient practices of meditation and yoga to create synergy between mind, body, and spirit. But what about old or disabled people who have restricted body movements due to age or a physical condition? The answer lies in Tai Chi, an ancient form of exercise that can be performed by anyone, irrespective of their age or disabilities.

Originally developed as an art of self-defence by the Chinese, Tai Chi has evolved into a wellbeing practice that offers a lifetime of rewards. It involves a series of gentle movements, focus, and breathing that stimulate life energy to heal the mind. Today, countless people around the world have adopted this ancient Chinese tradition to be healthy, not just from the outside but inside as well. To explore Tai Chi and its way of working, Soulveda spoke to Sifu George Thomas, founder of Fu Sheng Yuan, a Tai Chi training academy, who is on a mission to share this ancient art form with the world after learning it from the pioneers.

Tell us about your journey in the realm of Tai Chi? What motivated you to walk this path and learn this ancient practice?

My journey in Martial Arts started in 1977 when I joined a karate school and advanced to the level of sixth-degree black belt. During this journey, I participated in some international tournaments. On one such visit, way back in 1983, I happened to witness people practicing Tai Chi. I was curious to know more. After nearly a decade of exploration, in 1995, a Grand Master in the Yang style made me his disciple and trained me in Tai Chi. Since then, I have been devoted to this wonderful art, practising and teaching it simultaneously. What started as a passion has turned into my profession and I am enjoying every bit of it.

Can you explain how Tai Chi works? How do the gentle movements of the body produce a lifetime of benefits for people?

Tai Chi is a combination of physical exercise, breathing technique, and meditation, which simultaneously makes an impact on the mind as well as the body, and helps us evolve spiritually. Tai Chi harnesses the Chi (prana) and channelises it to all the energy centres of our body. It opens up blocked areas and supplies Chi to revitalise and rejuvenate us.

Tai Chi takes time to show its effects, but when practised every day for about five to 10 years, it manifests the same results as any other martial art technique. The Chi it releases directly impacts the mind, keeping us mentally strong and alert, enough to cope with the day-to-day pressures of life. That is why many sportsmen practise this ancient art form to remain calm at crucial stages of their game. Furthermore, Tai Chi tones up muscles, strengthens ligaments, tendons, bones, and nerves, which not only makes the practice a boon for athletes but old and disabled people as well.

Tai Chi works on the cardiovascular and digestive systems too, strengthening the heart, lungs and other internal organs. Overall, it strengthens the immune system, slows down ageing process, and keeps our mind healthy. If we fall ill, Tai Chi helps us to recover faster.

There are some forms of Tai Chi that are also known as Meditation in Motion. Tell us how a practice that involves body movements helps people focus and meditate, and enhance life force?

Yang Family Tai Chi movements are like the flow of a river without any break for 21 minutes, in which one performs about 600 to 700 movements. While one practices it, the pulse rate remains constant and so does the breathing—though at times it does slow down. One must move from left to right, forward and back at the same speed and the spine, too, must remain straight without being strained. However, the most important factor is that the mind must stay in the present moment. When the mind does not wander to the past or to the future and is in the here and the now, it is meditation. The combination of all this is “Meditation in Motion” or “Moving Meditation”. I am describing the Authentic Yang Family Tai Chi and not the other styles, which may not follow the uniform pattern popularly known as “Moving Meditation”.

How is Tai Chi different from its counterpart practices like Yoga and Qigong?

Yoga and Qigong are static. Tai Chi is a combination of physical exercises, breathing techniques and motions, performed in a slow, yet graceful and sophisticated manner. When you practice Tai Chi, you don’t feel exhausted or tired, but fresh and rejuvenated. The biggest difference, however, between Tai Chi and other practices is that it can be learnt at any age irrespective of your physical abilities. Even people with disabilities can learn and practice this art. It is a complete exercise for both the body and the mind.

How have you used Tai Chi as a means for your spiritual evolution?

As a living being, I have learned that each and every one of us is born with a purpose and only with a calm and composed mind can we realise our role on this planet. Tai Chi has helped me understand my purpose in life. We need to respect our fellow beings as they too have a role to play in this evolution. We need to mutually understand that we need each other to improve the quality of our lives here. Where does the question of superior and inferior arise then, if we can co-exist as equals, no matter what role we play?

HERE’S A QUICK WAY TO TREATING PCOS

PCOS Treatment in basaveshwaranagar - Janisthaa Fertility Centre

Young women suffering from PCOS is a common syndrome. Studies have revealed that one in five women suffer from PCOS in today’s time in urban areas. PCOS or Polycystic Ovary syndrome is an endocrinal or hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive ages. The most common correlate of PCOS is infertility in women.

About 70% of ovulatory fertility issues are known to be related to PCOS. The irregular menstrual cycle is the hallmark of this disorder – either the periods are absent for a few months or gets extended i.e, either too frequent or infrequent; it could also be associated with very heavy periods. This causes problems in conception.

PCOS is a complicated condition. For women who still conceive with PCOS, there are higher chances of miscarriages, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced blood pressure, preeclampsia, premature delivery etc. Thus, it could be a huge issue for married women for whom the societal pressure to conceive is high. Among youngsters/adolescents, it is often hard to diagnose which gives rise to complications. The condition could affect psychologically affecting self-esteem, self-identity and even lead to anxiety and depression.

Causes and Risks

Causes of PCOS are yet to be ascertained but few factors such as insulin resistance, increased levels of androgens, irregular periods etc are known to be associated with the disorder. Other associated factors have been explained below.

  • With the increased stress in day to day life, the younger generation is prone to several disorders that are known to be risk factors of PCOS. These include Type 2 diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, elevated lipids, metabolic disorders, nonalcoholic fatty liver etc
  • Increased work pressure also does not allow for a regular exercise routine causing obesity, which is highly correlated with PCOS.
  • Other conditions caused by stressful lifestyle such as sleep apnea, depression, anxiety are also associated with PCOS
  • Certain lifestyle practices such as increased alcoholism, smoking, usage of drugs, a sedentary lifestyle, do play a role
  • All of the above factors prevent a healthy lifestyle.

The effects of PCOS sometimes can lead to serious conditions that may last a lifetime and have complications. PCOS and insulin resistance could lead to Type 2 Diabetes (studies have shown that more than half of the women suffering from PCOS could develop Type 2 Diabetes before the age of 40), cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, endometrial cancer (due to the lining of the uterus becoming too thick) etc

THE HEALING

Not to be in vain. Modern technology such as ultrasound and a combination of tests help in analyzing the causes and related issues.  Modern medicine offers custom made treatments for women suffering from PCOS, depending on their condition. Some of the common forms of treatments are:

  • Hormone Pills – These could also include birth control pills for women who do not wish to be pregnant. The hormone pills help in regulating the hormonal cycle, reduce excessive hair growth, acne and chance of endometrial cancer.
  • Fertility Medications – If the women desires attain pregnancy, medications such as FSH and LH medications, Clomid, injectable gonadotrophins etc are used.
  • Fertility Treatments – Apart from medications, fertility treatments such as IVF or combinations could be adopted
  • Weight Loss – as obesity is a risk factor for PCOD, weight loss can help in regulating the menstrual cycle
  • Insulin-sensitizing Drugs – Help in decreasing the high levels of androgen, thereby regulating the menstrual cycle. In simple terms, these are diabetes medications to control the level of insulin
  • Surgery – When all options fail, surgeries are also performed such as ovarian drilling, cyst aspiration, oophorectomy etc.

Why being cool didn’t help

Why-being-cool-is-not-enough

How many of us have suffered through season upon season of Breaking Bad and still diligently followed the hit TV series just because we wanted to seem cool? I did. Fitting into skin-tight jeans was a trip to hell and back. Yet, I bought two of those just because they were in vogue (certainly not because they looked good).

From the time I began grasping the dynamics of urban middle class society, there was an urge to belong–somewhere, anywhere. Especially in a peer group that everybody else looked up to. When I was in high school, I wanted to hang out with people who listened to Backstreet Boys (yes, Backstreet Boys) and read Harry Potter. In college, there was music I did not understand or even appreciate, but it stayed on my playlist. This wish to belong did not just stop here, it became my shadow constantly monitoring my moves whether I fit in or not.

Familiar much? Welcome to the world of not knowing who you are and where you are headed.

In the pursuit of chasing the uber-cool, little did I realise I was missing out on things that mattered, that could shape my personality. I missed out on discovering my strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, abilities, talents and so much more. My days were ruled by saying and doing things I did not connect with or even approve of, in some cases. Nevertheless, I actively pushed myself to be part of it. I recall vividly, the sleepless nights I went through simply because I felt like a misfit. The effort to be cool corroded my confidence.

Take it from me, adhering to an image doesn’t just eat away at your self-esteem but is also tedious and exhausting. It used to be an ordeal waking up every morning and donning the mask of a person admired and envied by all. It was almost as if I had a split personality. A constant battle between the real me and the wannabe me left me suffocated, befuddled even. It was an endless struggle to find myself–a feeling of inadequacy that would ultimately translate into desperate attempts to fit in.

In the pursuit of chasing the uber-cool, little did I realise I was missing out on things that mattered, that could shape my personality.

This is not just my story. I bet, many of us can relate similar stories. So, how does one understand such internal conflict? Someone once told me, every situation has something to teach us. I knew this could be no different. I tried to look at the positive side of it. If I felt like a misfit, I tried to reinvent myself. I read different things, sampled different kinds of music and took cooking lessons to see what I actually loved doing. In retrospect, this quest to find myself was just the push I needed.

I dug deeper into the matter, trying to fathom why intelligent, evolved beings like us seem to constantly invest precious time and energy trying to be someone else (someone perfect, or at least near perfect) when we can spend it getting to know ourselves better?

My epiphany continued to keep me in an introspective mood. It told me that an almost innate need to be accepted and loved pushes us towards conformity. And it was this need for approval, above all else, that stood in my way of becoming my own person. Until one day, when I sat up and decided to question my perspective. And voila! I felt lighter and happier being myself. As I stopped looking for approval from my peers, there seemed to be no dearth of admiration from all around. The geeky girl with a pixie haircut at school, I eventually learnt to appreciate who I was. Of course, as irony would have it, by the time I grew up, being a nerd became cool. Except that it didn’t matter anymore.

Times change, so do perceptions. Ten years from now it won’t matter whether I was cool or lame. What will matter is the life lived, hearts made happier, friends cherished and lives touched.

Way better than cool.

OPEN THE DOORS OF PARENTHOOD THROUGH OVULATION INDUCTION

Ovulation-Induction

One of the leading concerns among modern times for women is the inability to conceive. Stressful lives with busy work schedule, meetings & deadlines leaving no time for exercise; junk and fast food replacing healthy home cooked food; alcohol, smoking and recreational drugs during weekend chill out to unwind and destress –  lifestyles that are a perfect cocktail for infertility. Sometimes the cause can be biological – genetic, hormonal – PCOS, ovarian failure, ovarian cysts, fibroids uterus, thin endometrium or anatomical – tubal disease, endometriosis and many more.

One such factor that leads to complications with conception is an important process of Ovulation. Ovulation refers to the process of release of eggs from the ovaries. The ovarian follicles rupture and the secondary oocyte ovarian cells are released, which are then available to be fertilized by the sperm. But at times, conditions such as Oligo-ovulation – that is infrequent ovulation or Anovulation – where ovulation does not occur at all i.e, follicles do not mature can lead to infertility.  As we comprehend, it is easier to treat causes that are external to the body while those internal need to be understood so that the exact cause can be treated effectively.

 THE HEALING

Luckily, modern science and technology have discovered a treatment even for conditions such as irregular ovulation or lack of ovulation by inducing ovulation. Hence the name Ovulation Induction. It is one of the kinds of treatments where eggs are made to mature and be released from the ovaries for fertilization, to match times intercourse or artificial insemination. Here is how it works.

  • Assessment – Prior to the procedure, assessments are carried out. Levels of various types of hormones such as thyroid, prolactin, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). Luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and other male androgens are assessed through blood tests. The ovulation cycle is tracked. Internal organs such as the womb, ovaries, follicles and the thickness of the uterine lining are assessed with the help of Ultrasound.
  • Stimulation – Once the assessments are made, the next most important step of Stimulation is carried out. In this stage, medications are prescribed to help the eggs in the follicles to mature and to be released. Medications such as Clomiphene Citrate are administered orally to trigger the release of hormones such as FSH and LH that aid in ovulation. Other alternatives such as Letrozole, Gonadotrophins and Gonadotrophin-releasing hormones amalogs are also often employed, even during IVF, to induce maturation of the follicles.
  • Monitoring – Goes hand in hand throughout the process. Monitoring the growth of the number of follicles and the size of the follicle is essential
  • Timed Intercourse or Artificial Insemination – Once the adequate number of follicles mature and the eggs are released, the couple is advised to have intercourse, which is often called ‘Timed Intercourse’, as the chances of the eggs getting fertilized are higher at that particular point in time. At times, Intra-uterine Insemination is also performed, where the semen collected is inserted into the uterus for the eggs to be fertilized.

Thus, the procedure helps in initiating the process of ovulation and release of an adequate number of eggs. The process is also often recommended in cases of IUIIVF or unexplained infertility. The success rate is up to 20% and is one of the least invasive methods of treatment.

7 signs your pet is stressed

A family of four became five with the addition of a newborn baby. Needless to say, the parents’ joy went through the roof as their family was now complete, with three adorable children to love and raise. Everyone was elated, except the older sister. She was having a hard time accepting the change, ever since the birth of her first brother. Even though the parents loved all the children unconditionally, the sudden shift in their attention and focus left her worried and stressed. With the arrival of the second brother, she lost all hope. She was convinced, the love, attention, and care she once received, were now things of the past.

Days went by fast. Weeks turned into months, and with time, the baby became louder and the sister quieter. The surprising thing was the parents’ were oblivious to the change in their daughter’s attitude. They failed to see the lingering sadness behind her big, beautiful eyes. Perhaps because, like many others, they never imagined dogs can get depressed too. As pet parents, humans have come a long way in treating their pets similar to their own children. But, despite their compassion, people still know little about their precious fur babies, especially when it comes to their psychological issues like stress.

Even in humans, it is difficult to discern stress. It is a faceless enemy that remains hidden unless one chooses to voice their issues. But humans have the freedom to seek help anytime they want. Dogs and cats, on the other hand, are voiceless creatures who bark or purr for every emotion they feel—happiness, anger, fear, love. It makes things even more difficult and critical for parents, as stress in pets can become harmful if left unaddressed. So, what can they do to help their fur babies recover?

The road to recovery starts when parents switch from looking to observing their fur babies’ behaviour, because that’s where all the answers lie. Pets’ behaviour and their body language are the only means to bridge the communication gap between them and us. One thing researchers have found is commonality in reasons that trigger stress in cats and dogs. Dr Rachel Barrack, a veterinarian from New York City who has practised in western medicine and ancient Chinese healing arts, believes the mental issues of dogs and cats can be a result of a major life change including moving to a new home, addition of a new member in a family, loss of a companion, changes to their typical routine, or a traumatic event like death. In such events, a dog or a cat may start acting different, which could be symptoms of restlessness or something more critical like stress. Let’s take a look at the symptoms of stress in dogs and cats, which pet parents need to be mindful of:

Dogs grieve

Staying in isolation

If your pet spends more time than usual under a table, sofa, or any place that is their ‘resting spot’, chances are they are not their usual self. They may look idle from outside, but it could be stress if they are unresponsive to their name or any gestures. They will show no interest in their walks or playing catch—things that would normally get them jumpy and excited.

Loss of appetite

Loss of complete appetite in pets is called anorexia and anorexia nervosa in the case of humans. Just like us, pets can get anorexia because of excessive stress and depression. The reasons to refuse food can vary from unfamiliar surroundings to the sudden disappearance of a family member. Whatever the cause may be, they will refuse to eat, even if it’s their favourite treat. They can continue to eat nothing for days together that could lead to serious health issues.

Sudden bouts of aggression

Newfound aggression in pets is a big red flag of stress—aggression from which no one is spared. They will bark or hiss at almost everyone, whether it is your friendly neighbour or your spouse who used to be greeted with a wagging tail or with a straight and slightly twitched tail, in case of cats. Unaware of the underlying issues, people try to pacify their pets by giving them a treat, tying them in the backyard, or raising their voices, which in fact, make things even worse. Such display of aggression is often accompanied with disobedience as well.

Non-stop licking and chewing

Internet is filled with pictures of pets licking their paws or chewing a toy. Such a ‘lost-in-thought’ moment makes for a good selfie. But many pet parents don’t realise the psychological implications behind their pets’ excessive licking or chewing. Similar to nail-biting in humans, pets lick or chew to soothe their anxieties and nervousness. They lick the same area or object repeatedly to relieve stress due to separation or fear.

cat litter box

Howling and yowling when separated

When stressed, dogs howl and cats yowl, especially when their pet-parent is not around. It is another symptom of separation-anxiety in pets that leads to restlessness and loss of appetite. Just like human babies, fur babies become stressed if their parents are away for too long. They start howling and yowling, which can continue throughout the day and night depending on their personalities.

Hiding to avoid interaction

Many dogs and cats act shy from time-to-time, on the basis of their moods or the surroundings. But more often than not, their shyness is temporary, unless they are stressed. That’s when they remain hidden for a better part of the day to avoid interacting with humans. Even if it’s their playtime, stressed pets will remain out of sight and curled-up to evade physical activities. And if someone attempts to caress them, the pets may get aggressive or relocate to a new spot to continue spending time in isolation.

Excessive urination inside the house

Dogs and cats often relieve themselves at home or in their litter box when pet parents miss taking them for their walks. But when pets begin to urinate at every corner they can find—the bedroom, kitchen, living room—it could be because they are stressed. Pets mark their territories inside to cover the scent of a parent who hasn’t been home for quite some time. Dogs and cats may also resort to marking territories out of stress when a new pet is brought home.

Dogs and cats are a lot like humans when it comes to emotions. Perhaps, that is why they get along so well with us. Only if they had a voice, it would have been easier to identify and address their mental issues too. But that’s just wishful thinking. However, if pet parents are just a tad more observant of sudden changes in body language or mindful of unusual behaviours they can pick up the cues to consult a veterinarian immediately. Remember, stress, is an invisible killer, as much for humans as their furry babies. So, it’s imperative to pay close attention to these voiceless pets to prevent any fatality.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS IVF ON PATIENTS WITH PREVIOUS OVARIAN DISEASES

fertility-ivf

Cancer is that one hard disease which none of us would like to have. But when you are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, your motherhood dreams can come to a standstill all of a sudden. Every moment would be difficult to surpass thinking about how to become pregnant in the future.

Cancer itself is a devastating agony. What if when someone is affected by cancer at a very young age? Or when you actually started planning for a baby, obviously your future dreams of parenthood is will be affected with it right?

Many myths you may hear that when someone is cancer affected, they are deprived of being a parent in the future.

Peoples having ovarian cancer and the resulting treatment can affect fertility. The treatment of it may cause the removal of ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.

In this scenario, normal pregnancy would be difficult. When you do chemotherapy, it can further damage your ovaries which can lead to an increased risk of earlier menopause.

Also, chemotherapy can delay your menstrual periods and the irregularities in the period would be a side effect of the fertility issue. That by itself is not a fertility issue. When radiation is done as a part of the treatment, gradually, it can lead to infertility.

With all these complications present, there can be still hope. It doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get pregnant as there are many other possible ways that help you to become pregnant and deliver a healthy baby.

With modern technological advancement, it has become easier than before to give birth in spite of you being affected by diseases like ovarian cancer. Not to worry. Cheer up, the doors to your parenthood is still open!

So, ideally, the best advice is that you need to go to the fertility centre and they need to store the ovarian eggs. A period of 15-20 days is needed for preserving the eggs.

However, you need to make sure that the preservation of eggs is done prior to your cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy as there is a greater possibility that these treatments can lead to infertility.

Once you store the eggs in an IVF clinic, you can go ahead with the cancer treatments as advised by your doctor.

So, here the good thing is that once you have completed the cancer treatment or when you have married already or after you marry and planning for a baby, you can approach the same IVF centre where your eggs are stored. These are the healthy eggs and hence, using these by mixing it with your husband’s sperm and then form an embryo. The embryo then can be placed in the uterus. In this way, pregnancy is possible without any complications.

You don’t have to lose hope anymore as fertility is absolutely possible! If you are a married couple, you thus choose the IVF treatments like Oocyte Banking and Embryo Banking.

Oocyte Banking or Egg Banking is required by young cancer patients before they experience possibly sterilizing treatment and is an alluring option to in vitro fertilization and embryo cryopreservation.

Embryo Banking, as mentioned before, is the collection of oocytes after the fertilization and then stored in the laboratory and froze to viable embryos.

Even if you have a worse case of uterine cancer and it is at the advanced stage wherein the uterus has to be removed, you can still opt for surrogacy.

Everything has a solution or an alternative to it. As you know even if one door closes, miracles can still happen!

If you are worried about IVF treatments when you are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, then the best thing to do is to approach the expert IVF specialist Dr Shwetha.Y.Baratikkae in Bangalore. With a proven track record of numerous success cases IVF high-risk pregnancies, she dedicates her immense care and knowledge to make your parenthood dreams come true!

When they met again

They-met-again

It was almost a year since Anubha left Ajay for another man. At least, that’s what her note said. Ajay was heartbroken because he believed they were perfect for each other—a match made in heaven, as the adage goes. But with that note, everything fell apart between them. Ajay, since then, had been looking for an answer to why she did that. Despite several efforts to forget his ladylove, he had not been able to move on.

Four years passed by. One afternoon, when Ajay was on his way back home from the office, something, or rather someone caught his attention. It was Anubha, sitting on a park bench. Ajay was speechless. He had never expected to see her again. He was overwhelmed by a rush of mixed emotions. On one hand, he was excited to see her, on the other, he wanted to confront her. Ajay stormed into the park and tapped Anubha on her shoulder. Startled, she lost her balance and fell headlong. Anubha brushed herself off but couldn’t stand on her own.

Not in his worst nightmare could Ajay have imagined what he saw—Anubha was missing her left leg. She was an amputee, wearing a prosthetic leg. Ajay was at a loss of words, his lips started trembling and tears rolled down his cheeks. A bruised Anubha smiled, “The accident changed my life. I left because I didn’t want you to suffer. I wanted you to lead a happy life.” Ajay broke down and wept inconsolably. For four years, all he did was curse Anubha for leaving him, while all she wanted for him was an unencumbered life. That day, when they met again, he realised what love really is.

What factors make a pregnancy high risk?

Pregnancy is treated as high risks one due to some of the below reasons:

  • Mother’s Age: – The Age of the mother-to-be plays a vital role in determining whether it can be a high-risk pregnancy or not. Women below 17 years and above 35 years are more prone to have high pregnancy risks with several complications possible during the pregnancy, which can also affect the baby. Sometimes, these risks include miscarriage or other genetic disorders which are more visible after 40 years.
  • Existing Health Issues: If a woman already affected by certain health problems like kidney issues, heart problem, high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and so on.
If anyone in the family has genetic disorders or when you had any miscarriage issues in the previous pregnancy, the risks are higher for a normal pregnancy. In such cases of health issues, it would be ideal for you to do a consultation with gynaecologist while you plan for a pregnancy.
This is an important step for a healthy pregnancy. You can be prescribed with medications, run tests and also advice on taking suitable precautions to improve your health and a healthy baby.
  • Being Obese or Overweight: With obesity, getting high blood pressure, stillbirth, neural tube defects and caesarean. As per the findings of NICHD research, risk of heart problems in the new-born baby will be higher about 15% when the mother is obese.
  • Multiple Births: The level of complications would be higher when the women have multiple foetuses like twins or multiples carried in the uterus. Some of such common related pregnancy risks are premature labour, preterm birth, and preeclampsia. Research findings show that over 93% of twins or triplets are given birth at the borderline or before 37 weeks gestation.
  • Pregnancy-related issues: Sometimes the high-risk pregnancy is associated with issues in the pregnancy itself. It may not be related to the health of the mother. Some of the pregnancy-related issues include:
    • Premature labor: This can start before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Even if there are lesser chances to have a preterm birth. Factors like infections or when the cervix is small or if the women had a history of preterm birth, the pregnancy complications are higher.
    • Placenta Previa: This is a problem that happens when the cervix is covered by the placenta. It can lead to major issues like bleeding when there is a contraction issue persisting. If the cervix is still covered by the placenta, the doctor may ask for a caesarean section. So that it can reduce the risks associated with bleeding and save both mother and baby.
    • Fetal problem: Another pregnancy risk can be fetal problem wherein around 2% to 3% of babies can have structural and proper development problems. Such fetal problems can arise from family history or may be due to any other unexpected issues.

The science behind meditation

WEL_The-science-behind-meditation

What happens when you meditate? You feel a stillness in your wandering mind and calmness in your breathing. Every breath evaporates your stress into thin air. You forget about the chaos in your life. It is just your mind and the body becoming one with your surroundings, as you experience mindfulness like never before. With every passing minute, your mind becomes more aware and more focused. You feel in control of your thoughts. As the profound feeling of peace and repose overwhelm you, you open your eyes to a world that feels new and quieter.

Countless people meditate every day. From the shrines of the East to the city parks of the West, meditation and its tangible benefits help people navigate their lives toward serenity. For monks and hermits, meditation is a gateway to higher consciousness and enlightenment, a path shown by sages and the Buddha. For people living in cities, the practice is like the ‘morning coffee’ they take to awaken themselves. The perceptions and applications may differ. But the fact remains that the prehistoric discipline of meditation has admirers in all corners and alleys of the world. It begs the question: How a routine, as simple as breathing or chanting a mantra, can have such radical effects on one’s mind and body that it has become a lifestyle choice for so many?

Science has the answer. A few years ago, neuroscientists from Harvard conducted a study to understand how the brain reacts to meditation. What they found was nothing less than extraordinary. According to the research, the part of the brain responsible for reasoning, planning, emotions, and self-conscious awareness becomes dormant during meditation. It means all the thoughts that flood the mind evaporate within a second. At the same time, the section that reads sensory information begins to shut down as well, making the nervous system less sensitive. A state of silence and stillness fills the mind, as the focus converges on breathing, a thought, or on an external object—as per the type of meditation. “This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing,” says Sarah Lazar, PhD, senior author of the study.

The rewards of meditation are not limited to just psychological wellbeing. It also helps people to become a better version of themselves.

While Dr Lazar’s research shows how quietness and stillness of the mind lead to physical changes in the brain, other studies indicate how they affect the practitioner’s wellbeing. One such study led by Joshua Grant, a neuroscientist from Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, reveals how pain sensitivity of the brain reduces by 57 percent through meditation—97 percent for accomplished meditators. For its proven results, doctors around the globe prescribe meditation to cancer and arthritis patients to help them cope with pain. And not just the physical pain, but as evidence suggest, emotional and psychological pain as well, which could spring from a broken relationship or challenges in a career. Perhaps, that is why experts advise people who are going through rough patches in their lives to meditate. As science implies, with meditation, people can find peace, and happiness to soothe their minds.

For centuries, people questioned the impact and benefits of meditation on one’s wellbeing. But now the debate has come to an end with extensive studies and researches to support its effectiveness. Meditation is indeed the elixir of life: it reduces ageing, improves our memory, and our ability to multitask; our ability to think outside the box; increases our attention span; helps people manage their anxiety, stress, and depression. The rewards of meditation are not limited to just psychological wellbeing. It also helps people to become a better version of themselves. In a paper, published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers found that through meditation, people can become more compassionate and confident, and acquire higher emotional intelligence. They feel less lonely, as they learn to regulate their emotions in a more constructive way.

Through meditation, individuals can keep their relationships healthy too. A joint conducted by the University of Wyoming and the University of Oregon revealed the empirical link between the two. It says that people who meditate are more likely to keep themselves calm, in the events of arguments or disputes. They don’t take things personally; they don’t speak on impulses; they know how to engage in disagreement and when to disengage; they show empathy towards their partner. Researchers claim, “It helps partners to regulate their own responses and more fully accept one another resulting in less negative fallout from conflict when it arises.” When you practise meditation, you don’t have to wait to feel these changes manifesting inside you. Before you know, people closer to you will tell “you look different”.

Above everything, meditation gives perspective. It liberates us by simply cleaning our minds littered with the irrational, unwanted, and wandering thoughts that cause various psychological disorders. “The quality of our life depends on the quality of our mind,” says Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. In life, we can’t control what happens to us. Through meditation, however, we can control our attitude and our response to these critical situations.
